Dear Parents and Teens,
When I was in college I took a course in Western Symbolic Logic; for those of you
who are not familiar, it is essentially learning to solve problems using algebraic
principals but without the use of numbers and absence of conventional mathematic
symbols. So it’s basically like learning a universal foreign language. Counter
intuitive… I know.
I believe that the art of improvisation is like Symbolic Logic. It embodies universal
principals in communication and employs them in a multitude of contexts. How do I
know this? Well to answer that you need to know a little bit about me. I grew up
playing sports, baseball, soccer, hockey… I could go on. I then threw myself a curve
ball, so to speak, and began training in classical ballet and contemporary dance.
After graduating high school I through myself ANOTHER curve ball and joined the
military where I served as a Navy Corpsman (a medic, for the non-military folk).
After I left the military. I went to school studying Architectural and Engineering
Computer Aided Drafting. Then I worked in a bank and then as a private contractor
in the IT field, which I still do to this day… So, I’ve been around a little and tried a bit
of everything from the buffet of life. Having such a diverse background in my life
has really given me an opportunity to start making associations between vastly
different things and to realize that when you break it down to brass tacks, it’s all
really the same!
Improv, I have found, has taken all of my life experiences and condensed it down in
to a single form, effectiveness by way of association. Once you have some basics
down, it is mind boggling to see how those principals and concepts bleed over into
everyday life. It teaches you to not have fear of the unknown, to switch gears
between tasks quickly, to support your fellow teammates and how to build
understanding within brand new scenarios everyday!
I have found myself realizing during exercises that much of what we were practicing
could be associated with something else I had done in my life, and what is more, put
a finer point on it! Since having started improv back in 2011, my life has grown
much richer, my friendships much more meaningful and my work much more
fulfilling. It is my belief that Improvisation has made me more effective as a person,
a friend, a husband and professionally. If only I had started when I was younger.
I feel that Improv is ideal for young developing minds. It is in our formative and
pivotal years that we may feel unsure about life and what lays ahead, the irony is
that it is during these years that our creativity is on overdrive!!! As long as you can
strip away the fear that surrounds the uncertainty and focus on the moment, there
truly is no measure to what you can accomplish. This is exactly what Improv
teaches. I have taught workshops with teens and kids of all ages and seen that it
really does work!!!
It all sounds kind of heavy, right? Well the best part about Improv is that its fun! So
I look forward to seeing you in class!
